It wasn’t easy at first—Elon slept in the office and showered at a nearby gym. But after a few years, Compaq bought Zip2 for $307 million. Elon made $22 million from the deal.

Instead of relaxing, he started another company called X.com, an online banking service. Later, it became PayPal, which allowed people to send money online easily. In 2002, eBay bought PayPal for $1.5 billion. Elon walked away with $180 million.

Most people would retire after making so much money, but not Elon. He had bigger dreams—space, electric cars, and renewable energy.

SpaceX: Making Space Travel Affordable

Tesla’s first car, the Roadster, came out in 2008. It was fast but expensive. Later, Tesla launched the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, which became hugely popular. Today, Tesla is the biggest electric car company in the world, inspiring the entire auto industry to switch to electric vehicles.
