In 1981, his father called him back to India to help build Reliance, which was just beginning to expand into petrochemicals and refining. Mukesh never completed his MBA, but he learned lessons that no classroom could ever teach.
Transforming Reliance
When Mukesh joined Reliance, the company was growing, but its ambitions were sky-high. Under his leadership, Reliance transformed from a textile company into India’s biggest conglomerate, with interests in petrochemicals, refining, telecommunications, and retail. His most significant contribution came with the establishment of the Jamnagar Refinery, the world’s largest refinery, which revolutionized India’s energy sector.
